Fair hiring doesn’t happen by accident. A short, clear policy gives everyone involved in recruitment the same standards to work to — and gives candidates confidence they’ll be judged on what matters.
Why a written policy helps
Most bias in hiring comes from inconsistency: different questions for different candidates, vague criteria, and decisions made on gut feel. A policy sets the process once so it’s applied the same way every time.
What the template covers
- Writing adverts with inclusive language and genuinely essential criteria
- Where to advertise to reach a wider range of applicants
- Structured interviews with the same questions and scoring for everyone
- Diverse interview panels and how to brief them
- Reasonable adjustments throughout the process
- Monitoring outcomes and reviewing the policy each year
Your legal baseline
Under the Equality Act 2010, employers must not discriminate on the basis of protected characteristics at any stage of recruitment, and must make reasonable adjustments for disabled candidates. The template is built around these duties, but it isn’t legal advice — have it reviewed for your organisation.
